In the inaugural championship game in Ripken Minor League Experience history, the Big Bens (5-1) continued their high scoring ways en route to a 19-3 victory over the Slaks (3-3) to become league champions.
The Big Bens outscored their opponents 81-36 in 6 games of play, defeating the three other teams at least once each. Manager Ben McDonald's squad was led in the championship game by league MVP Rob Nelson, who earned the complete game win on the heels of 5 innings and a win in the semis on Saturday.
Rod Wrobbel and Peter Schmuck led the way with 4 hits and 3 RBI each. Steven Klein added 3 hits, with Marc Altschull, Steven Head and Jay Demarest pitching in with 2 hit games.
Nelson scattered 13 hits over 7 innings in allowing only 3 runs. He walked none and amassed 8 strikeouts on the day.
Slaks shortstop Kevin Jackson continued his stellar play with a 3-4 day and 2 runs scored. Throughout the 4 days, he hit .389 with 8 runs scored.
Roger Ralph came across with the other run for the Slaks, but it was too little, too late, as the Slaks had the game well in hand.
Dennis Lee, Jr. began the game on the mound for the Slaks and took the loss.
Thank you for everyone for participating and joining us for the inaugural Ripken Minor League Experience. We all had a great time and hope you did as well, and we look forward to seeing everyone back out next year!
