April 6, 2005 - The Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation broke ground on Phase II of Cal Sr.’s Yard during a ceremony Tuesday April 5th. Congressman Dutch Ruppersberger, elected Harford County officials, Foundation board members, and other distinguished guests joined Cal Ripken, Jr. and Bill Ripken for a ceremony that took place on Cal Sr.’s Yard, located at the Ripken Complex in Aberdeen, MD. When complete, Cal Sr.'s Yard will be a miniature replica of Oriole Park at Camden Yards. Phase II of construction will build the stadium structure, concession stands, restrooms, and about 600 permanent seats. During the ground breaking ceremony, Bill spoke of the "wow factor" that Cal Sr.'s Yard will provide to children who play on the field. "Think about kids coming from the inner city and being brought to this field to play ball. They will have the same "wow" moment that Cal and I had when we walked on to the new Camden Yards field for the first time." The Foundation uses this "wow factor" to capture children's attention and to inspire them to work hard to achieve their dreams. Children are taught baseball skills when visiting Cal Sr.'s Yard, but more importantly, they also learn teamwork, sportsmanship, leadership, and perseverance, all lessons that will impact their lives as they grow. The construction on the field is scheduled to be complete in August 2005, in time to host the 2005 Cal Ripken World Series, the yearly culmination of the season for Babe Ruth League 12 and under players. Cal Sr.'s Yard will become the permanent home of this prestigious Series each summer. Cal Sr.'s Yard is being financed by corporate and individual donations. Phase III of construction, including more seats behind both dugouts, will be completed as funds become available.
