In the summer of 1999, Babe Ruth League, Inc. changed the name of its largest division from “Bambino” to “Cal Ripken Baseball.” Since the name change, the league has grown by an average of 7% each year and is the only youth baseball league that has shown growth over that time. Currently, over 700,000 kids, ages 5-12, play Cal Ripken Baseball worldwide.
Each year the season culminates with the annual Cal Ripken World Series. In 2003, the Ripken Baseball Complex, located in Cal’s hometown of Aberdeen, MD, became the permanent home of the Cal Ripken World Series. In 2005, the World Series moved from Ripken Stadium to Cal, Sr.’s Yard, a youth sized version of Oriole Park at Camden Yards, located adjacent to Ripken Stadium in the heart of the Ripken Youth Baseball Academy.
Since 2003, the International countries represented in the tournament have been Australia, Canada, the Dominican Republic, Korea and Mexico. In 2005 more than 5,500 fans packed Cal Sr.’s Yard to see Hawaii defeat Mexico in the title game, which was broadcast nationally on Comcast SportsNet.
