Major Renovations at The Ripken Experience - Myrtle Beach, SC
Griffith Field, one of three 90-foot diamonds, to be overhauled during facility off-season
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Ripken Experience Myrtle Beach, owned and operated by Burroughs & Chapin Co. Inc., and Ripken Baseball, today announced a planned, one-million dollar renovation of an existing 90-foot baseball diamond, Griffith Field, during the facility’s off-season.
Griffith Field is one of the original 90-foot baseball diamonds constructed when the complex first opened in June of 2006. It has facilitated over 2,500 baseball games in six seasons and serves as the host field for all Opening Day Ceremonies during their annual 10-week summer tournament series.
“In order to keep our facility up to standards, we felt it was necessary to go ahead and completely renovate Griffith Field,” commented The Ripken Experience Myrtle Beach general manager, Bobby Holland. “By maintaining and updating our older fields, we will continue to provide participants with a safe, high-quality complex for all baseball and softball programming.”
Ripken Design, a Baltimore-based company that specializes in design services for baseball and multi-sport complexes, has been retained to oversee the project, along with FIELDS, a sports-turf company that specializes in artificial turf fields. The playing surface at Griffith Field will be updated with the latest version of AstroTurf® Game Day grass, and the sub-base and drainage system will receive a much need overhaul as well.
During 2011, The Ripken Experience Myrtle Beach hosted over 980 travel baseball teams, including 498 teams from 31 states and two international teams during the summer months. The announcement of the Griffith Field renovation comes one year after the complex added its eighth field, Ebbets Field, which allowed more space for teams to compete in Ripken Baseball tournaments in Myrtle Beach.
